“Hi, everybody!” The two minutes’ dead air time that had fallen over the airwaves of 3XTC was disrupted by the sound of Zack Beauvert-Vandargard.

“Sorry about the quiet. My dads are being gross and kissing my mom again.” The words were coloured by the typical disgust a seven-year-old boy could muster in light of a parental display of affection. “They’re downstairs if you want to throw snowballs at them.”

His front teeth had finally come in, stopping the lisp his mother had loved so much. Every once in a while he would deliberately say a word wrong, just to make her smile. Zack glanced down through the window to the street below. His dads and mom were talking to his Grammas Poppy, Lavender, and Lily. “I know it’s gross, but I think it’s okay, today. I found out when I got home from Lulu’s house I get to be a big brother this summer and that’s really cool.”

He used the mouse to click on a few songs as he talked. His dad taught him all sorts of things about talking on the radio and now he got to come on and talk whenever he wanted as long as he remembered his manners. He got to go to school at home now and he had a big family. The best part was most of them could change into different animals and would play in the snow with him and his friends.

Last week they had a family meeting and his parents explained to him that he was going to go through some changes in a few years and that he would be able to change into a coywolf like his dad. The idea had scared him at first, but his parents promised that they would help him and he wouldn’t be alone when it happened.

Zack laughed when he saw Mr. Sloan run out of the arcade and pelt both of his dads with a snowball. Even funnier, while they tried to protect his mom and return fire, Grama Lily calmly walked a few feet away, scooped up some snow, and got Mr. Sloan in the side of the head. She wound up and took aim, and powie-kazowie! She nailed him! Then acted as surprised as everyone else and looked around as if she had no idea who threw it. When she looked up at the window, she waved and Zack gave her two thumbs up for her awesome aim.

“Okay, I get to go for my snack in a minute. Miss Catherine said she would make me some sausage rolls when I finished my studies. Right, Miss Catherine?” He giggled, knowing she’d have the radio on in The Shack and by the time he got down there she’d have them ready for him. “I’m putting on the songs now so that it’s not quiet till my dad gets back. I’m starting with my mom’s favorite song, ‘Stuck Like Glue’ by Sugarland. She sings it to my dads all the time.”

He hit the button to start the songs and then buttoned his coat and pulled on the red-and-green toque to keep his ears warm while he headed across the street to meet Lulu. Today was the first day with lots of snow on the ground and he couldn’t wait to go tobogganing before dinnertime. Luc and Max promised to come as moose and pull their toboggans back up the hill. Ecstasy Lake was the best place in the universe. Zack knew he would be happy forever.
