  Chapter One

Blessed with exceptional hearing, Jessica Tam knew what was going on before she opened her bedroom door. The sight that greeted her wasn’t a surprise. Her boyfriend, Geoff, lay on his back on the bed with a blonde Jess recognized from the gym bouncing on his cock. He gripped her hips, jerked up against her hard, and then glanced over at Jessica.

“It’s about fucking time, Jessie. Where have you been?”

The woman quickly turned her head and grinned at her. “Hi, Jess.” She wiggled her fingers in a cutesy little wave.

Jess raised her hand to return the greeting out of habit. Could this situation be more messed up? I’m standing here waving hi to the woman having sex with my boyfriend. She felt like her emotions had gone completely numb, as did her brain, because she couldn’t think straight.

“Get your clothes off and get into bed with me and Cheryl.” Geoff jerked his hips up, making the woman on his lap squeal and then laugh.

Jess blinked at him in shock. Is he serious? “But I just came back from the gym.” And I need to get away from here.

“Oh, all right,” he sighed as if she was putting him out in some way. “Go have a shower and then come in here.” He slapped Cheryl on the ass and she giggled as she swiveled her hips against him.

“Look at these beautiful titties, Jessie.” He reached up and wrapped his fingers over Cheryl’s breasts, making the stupid woman giggle again. “I want to see your lips on her tits. Come on, hurry up.”

“Geoff, I don’t think that we talked about this.” Jessica’s heart pounded against her chest and a sharp throbbing started in her temples.

“Don’t be an idiot. You’re making Cheryl uncomfortable.”

Cheryl looked over her shoulder and smiled sweetly at Jess. “I’m okay, hun. Why don’t you do as he says and come in here so we can play, too?”

“Yes, that is what I want to see.” He shook her breasts and Cheryl ground her hips against his. “Jessie can make up for coming home so late from the gym. She will lick that pretty twat of yours until you cream all over her face.”

Jessica had never given Geoff the impression she would be interested in having sex with a woman. As usual, he only heard what he wanted to hear whenever he brought it up in conversation. She jerked her thumb over her shoulder. “I’ll go shower.”

“Fine, get to it and make it fast. I want to watch you both making out over my cock.” Geoff started fingering Cheryl’s clit, ignoring Jessica for the moment.

Jess practically ran to the bathroom, and that was where she stopped. Staring at herself in the mirror, she wondered exactly who the woman was staring back at her. How did she get herself into this? I don’t want this. I don’t want to do this. Fear gripped her throat and she frantically thought about how to get out of it. When she first met Geoff he seemed so strong and she felt safer than she ever had before. But safety turned into control and then possession.

&
nbsp; After dinner at Gordon Roberts’s a few months ago Geoff became almost obsessed with her boss’s relationship.

Gordon’s two wives, Helen and Ann, loved him as much as they did each other. They shared a beautiful family and they all respected each other and supported each other. Ever since that night, Geoff went on and on about how they needed to find her a girlfriend. It wasn’t that Jess had anything against that kind of relationship, it simply wasn’t for her. As the weeks went by Geoff became more and more fixated with the idea bringing another woman into their relationship. She should have known that this was a possibility. Geoff always got his way, and she did as she was told. When Geoff didn’t get his way, well—Jessica learned the hard way to make sure he got what he wanted.

Now she was on the brink of a massive change in her life that she didn’t want. She felt betrayed and abused. She had gone to great lengths to hide the bruises that Geoff inflicted on her. Because she healed so quickly, she didn’t have to try all that hard, but Gordon had started to suspect something was wrong. Every time one of his wives had come to the office, they would ask all sorts of questions about her life.

It wasn’t entirely Geoff’s fault. She knew he started juicing, and steroid-induced rages were a side effect. But this was too much. No one could fault her for leaving him because he was having an affair. Is it even sane that I feel the need to make an excuse to leave him?

She couldn’t just break it off with him. He would come after her and make her come back. And she would because she couldn’t help herself. There was something about the strength of him that made her want to follow. She could blame her animal instincts but there was a time she never would have put up with this shit. She’d allowed him to whittle down her self-confidence over the last nine months.

Jessica looked at the panicked woman in the mirror again. “You can do this. You have to do this. Leave it all behind you.” She could see the colour draining from her own face. “If you don’t go now, you never will.” And she would end up like her mother, terrified to be alone, and worshiping the ground of a man who treated her like garbage.

Jessica hated her father and the forests she’d grown up in. When the opportunity had come up to work in Ontario for the Ecstasy Lake pack she’d jumped at it. Her younger brother Daniel had come with her at the time. He’d said he wanted to protect her, but she’d known he wanted to get away from their parents as well. She still remembered being terrified of Gordon at that first meeting. Now that she knew him better, she understood her fears had been unnecessary. Gordon wouldn’t hurt a single hair on the head of any woman in his pack. He wasn’t a pushover, and would order the slaughter of anyone who endangered his extended family. Thankfully, she’d only ever seen that side of him once.

She knew she was in a better position than many women. She had a place to go, but if she called Gordon he might show up and kill Geoff, and she couldn’t risk that possibility. Actually, he was levelheaded enough not to maim Geoff, but Ann or Helen wouldn’t be as calm. She didn’t want to put the family in that kind of position.

If her brother found out, Geoff would be a dead man, but her brother was in British Columbia on training with another pack there. It was Gordon’s idea, and so far it had worked out well. The packs followed a similar system to the one the medieval clans did. Where the clans had fostered out their sons for training, the packs now sent men who had been promoted to Guardians to other packs for training. This way the ties in their small communities were strengthened, and it helped extend families and create a bond among shifters.

After turning on the shower, she quietly opened the bathroom door, slipped into the hallway, and tiptoed her way to front door. Considering the noise that was coming from the bedroom, it sounded like she wasn’t distracting them, and they had no idea she was leaving. Still Jessica darted quick looks back to the bedroom doorway every few seconds, fearful that she would be caught. She would make it this time. This time she was going to go.

  “Jessie!”

Jessica almost fell to her knees when she heard Geoff holler her name.

  “Jessie! Hurry the fuck up!”

Her hands shook violently with relief. He thought she was in the shower. But it also meant she didn’t have much time. She grabbed her purse and hugged it tightly to her body as she moved across the living room to the front door. It took precious seconds for her to unlock the dead bolt, praying the whole time he wouldn’t hear the snap of the lock as she opened it. Once in the hallway, she eased the door closed, letting go of the handle as soon after the door completely closed. The snick of the latch sounded like a cannon shot to her and she could almost envision Geoff quickly moving off the bed to investigate. He would know she’d left. He always seemed to know when she’d wanted to leave him. He’d kick the shit out of her if he caught her.

Jessica ran down the hallway and smacked her fingers against the down button to the elevator. Seconds ticked by, and she tapped the button again. “Oh, come on. Hurry up.” She darted looks down the hallway. Any moment that door was going to open and he would see her. He would order her into the apartment and she would go because she didn’t have the strength to say no.

  Not anymore.

She’d obeyed her father and then Geoff and had done what she could to protect them and hide the abuses they’d both heaped on her head. She couldn’t do it anymore. This had nothing to do with the woman in her bed. Strangely, that didn’t anger her at all. In fact she felt a sense of relief that she didn’t have to service Geoff’s needs.

She tapped against the button again, her heart pounding against the inside of her chest. A loud roar echoed down the hall.

Was that my name? She froze, positive she heard her name being yelled. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes. Hurryuphurryuphurryup, she mentally begged the elevator. If she had been thinking clearly she would have taken the stairs in the first place. Out of habit, she’d gone straight for the elevator and it was too late to change her mind now. That would mean heading back past her apartment door. She couldn’t make it. He would be there. Her legs trembled and she couldn’t hear anything past her own breathing.

A soft ding made her jump and the elevator door opened. Darting in, she rapidly smacked the close button. Almost there.

  “Jessie!”

Her heart leapt to her throat at the sound of Geoff’s voice. The door slid shut, cutting off the angry shout she heard echoing down the hall. Oh, no. Geoff would take the stairs, she knew it. Which means I have less time to get away. No matter how fast he ran, she would still have a few seconds to spare. Oh please, please, please.

Waves of terrified nausea cramped her stomach. She could almost see his furious expression. Don’t let him be in front of the doors when they open. The swift descent was uninterrupted. Instead of heading to the parking garage and her car, she got off at the lobby. When the doors opened, Jess bolted out as fast as she could. She might not be as fast as some of the Alpha wolves but she knew she could easily outrun a human. At this point, she didn’t care if anyone saw her. She punched open the glass doors and escaped into the night.

The temperature had dropped, and the overcast skies created numerous shadows for her to hide in. Freezing rain stung her cheeks as she ran. Her sneaker slipped on the wet pavement but she recovered and kept moving. As soon as she could, she ducked into an alley and hid. Her entire body trembled as she tried to calm down. I got away. I did it! It felt like a lead weight had been lifted off her shoulders. I should have done this months ago.

Her cell phone rang but it was Geoff’s number on the display. No way could she answer that. Forget it. Even seeing the number sent a fresh wave of fear through her system. She couldn’t do this alone. The moment her phone stopped ringing, it started again. She watched the display and let it go to voice mail. He would freak on that and it would give her a couple moments of peace. The moment her phone stopped ringing, she quickly dialed for help.

  * * * *

Jelani Bennett scanned the area in front of him. “Where di
d that sniper go?”

“Watch your flank,” his brother replied, via the bud in his ear.

“Shit.” Jelani spun around in time to watch as the ground rushed up to meet him. “Dammit, that noob shot me again. I’m on your team, dickhead!”

“I don’t think the kid can hear you.” His brother, Marcario, laughed across from him and he could hear the echoes of laughter in his earphones. Meeting up online with their friends, Duke and Gage from Texas, for a bit of Call of Duty was something they didn’t get to do as often as they would like. The four of them had played together for ages and they tended to dominate all their missions, except when newbies joined their team and repeatedly shot them in the back.

He flopped back against the sofa and waited to get back into the game. They only had a few days left before heading back to Africa and they were crashing at their brother-in-law’s condo in Toronto.

The phone started ringing, and since he was dead for a few moments, he took opportunity to answer it, snagging it on the second ring. “Hi.”

“Um, hello. Is Mai Solfalvi there, please?”

“Sorry, she’s out right now.” He reached over for a pen and a piece of paper. “Can I take a message?”

  “What about Gaspar or Vencel?”

The woman’s voice took on a slightly hysterical tone, and Jelani got up from the couch and stepped away from the noise of gunfire and his brother’s profanity so he could hear her better. “They’re out with Mai. I’m her brother, Jelani Bennett, is there something I can do to help you? Are you all right?” He wasn’t about to stand around and do nothing if someone needed help.
